The Conjuring: Vera Farmiga sees dead people

Every time we're going to watch a genre film we're not only watching a single movie. In a certain way we are watching hundreds of other movies that follow the same rules, try to cause the same effects and eventually end up in the same folder on the Netflix page.

Some movies like the Wes Craven's Scream saga made this pretty obvious, exposing the rules they need to follow. James Wan's The Conjuring is different, instead of exposing its mechanism, The Conjuring seems to feed itself of some of its predecessors to create something that looks new precisely because it doesn't try to be new.

The Conjuring doll is a mix of Chucky and Talky Tina, the murderous doll in the 1963 Twilight Zone episode "Living Doll"

You can see reference to the Twilight Zone, Paranormal Activity, The Amityville Horror,  The Birds, The Exorcist ans Saw (by James Wan too) just to name some, but The Conjuring is not another postmodern exercise of references and self reference. The movie uses our own archive to take us back to a place that result familiar and scary at the same time. Beside that we have really interesting camera movements and shots, really scary scenes and, of course, the clapping game, something that is now in the history on the genre.

I really like movies like Scream or The Cabin in the Woods but It's good to see a horror film that take itself seriously once in awhile.

The Future of the Film Industry

On June 12, 2013 Steven Spielberg and George Lucas spoke about the future of the movie business at the USC School of Cinematic Art. The conclusion: everything is about to change.

Spielberg said, and I quote:

"There's going to to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen mega budget movies are going to crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm"

The paradigm Spielberg is referring is relating to distribution. In the Internet/Netflix/Videogames era, people don't have time enough to go to the movies the way they used to so the weekly premiere system is about to collapse.

According to Spielberg and Lucas in the future only a few movies will be premiere on the movie theaters under a scheme similar to Broadway, a long period of exhibition (maybe a year) and much more expensive tickets. The rest of the movies will go directly to our TVs through a VOD system.

Just a month after the Spielberg's prophecies, The New York Times made a note entitled "Weekend Box Office Reflects a Season of Big-Budget Stumbles" in which count no three or four but half-dozen mega budget movies crashing into the ground.

R.I.P.D., Turbo, Pacific Rim, White House Down, The Lone Ranger and After Earth were the chosen ones. All these movies have budgets over $130 million and all of them failed on the box-office side. The biggest fail was maybe The Long Ranger, with a budget over the $215 million (over $300 million if include the marketing), the movie made only $29,210,849 during its opening weekend according to box office mojo. So we're not sure about what is going to happen in the future but so far Spielberg and Lucas seem to have a crystal ball. If you don't believe me, go and watch Minority Report.

Here you can see part of the Spielberg and Lucas interview:

Madonna: 30th anniversary - It has been a long journey

On July 27 1983 the world changed forever, at least for me. Madonna was releasing her first album. It's been three decades since then and I still love her as the first time I heard about her. To be honest I was just a little kid in 1983 so actually I started loving her a little later but now I could say she is most important for me than probably the 85% of my relatives and without any doubt she is the woman with whom I have had the most lasting and successful relationship of my life (all good comedy is a little sad).

On the 30th anniversary of Madonna (the first album), my 30 favorites looks of one of my favorites women in the Earth.

Number 30: The real person
There are not so many pictures of Madonna looking like a regular person. This is one of my favorites.

Number 29: The Groom
20 years after coming out of a wedding cake... ups, she did it again. This time proving that she is the girl in charge, getting together Britney and Cristina and getting a taste of their tongues almost at the same time.

Number 28: The Shocking Pair
Madonna team up with Jean-Paul Gaultier to shock the world on 1992, during a fashion show to benefit Amfar

Number 27: The Saturday Night Fever
1996. During her Confessions Tour, she embodied John Travolta in his famous white suit and gave us a Music that we'll never forget.

Number 26: The Owner of the Throne
At the 2011 half time show at the Super Bowl, Madonna proved again she is the only Queen wearing a Cleopatra inspired costume.

Number 25: The Grunge
1998 Golden Globe. She looks chic messy and she won!

Number 24: The Dominatrix
October 21, 1992. The world read Sex. A lot of people hated the book but now it's considered a post feminist work of art.

Number 23: The Lady
May 2, 2011. She looks just amazing in this decadent Stella McCartney dress at the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York.

Number 22: The Detrich
June 19, 2013. Madonna embrace the glamour and spirit of Marlene Dietrich at the New York premiere of her MDNA Tour documentary.

Number 21: The Hindu
1992 MTV Video Music Award. Madonna opened the night performing Shanti/Ashtangi in a postmodern Hindu look.

Number 20: The 80s
Madonna's look from the 80s defined a character and a star and created a legion of wannabes trying to copy her.

Number 19: The Cowgirl
November 16, 2000.  She wore this amazing outfit during at the MTV Video Music Award at Stockholm.

Number 18: The Corsets
You think of Madonna and probably think in a corset. These are just two of then. On the left the one she wore during her Reinvention Tour. On the right, the Jean-Paul Gaultier reinvention of his own work. In both cases she is performing Vogue.

Number 17: The Irreverent
November 19, 2008. Only Madonna can dress entirely Louis Vuitton at a Gucci event. At the Gucci's launch of the tattoo Heart Collection.

Number 16: The Statement.
March 2003. Madonna wore boy scout uniform to GLAAD Awards, criticizing the boy scout organization for banning gay members. She obviously doesn't look good but she was fighting for a good cause.

15: The Natural
The Like a Prayer video is the only case in which we can see Madonna wearing her natural hair color. She looks just beautiful.

14. The Coolest.
September 7, 1995. She embraced a modern Brigitte Bardot look at the MTV Video Music Awards.

13. The Evita
December 14, 1996. At the premiere of the film Evita at Los Angeles. She was wearing Evita Peron inspired Versage.

12. The Punk
May 6, 2013. She was one of the few who actually get the punk theme of the MET Gala 2013 - Punk: Chaos to Couture

Number 11: The Enlightened
She look just amazing in this dark denim jacket on the Ray of Light music video.

10. The Disco Dietrich.
1993. During her Girlie Show Tour, Madonna pay homage to Marlene Dietrich getting inspiration on the 1932 film Blonde Venus.

Number 9: The Marie Antoinette.
September 12, 1990. Madonna embodied Marie Antoinette at the MTV Video Music Awards. The costume was first worn by Glenn Close in the 1998 film Dangerous Liaisons

Number 8: The Geisha.
She wore this red Jean-Paul Gaultier kimono at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards.

Number 7: The old-fashion Hollywood Glamour
March 25, 1991. At the 63rd annual Academy Awards she paid tribute to the old school Hollywood divas, wearing $20 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds.

Number 6: The Feminist
At the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. She sang her mega hit and feminist iconic theme Express Yourself wearing her top underwear out.

Number 5: The Marilyn.
Madonna embodied Marilyn Monroe in one of her most popular videos, Material Girl.

Number 4: The Movie Star
Madonna wore this dress, created especially for her by Italian designer Vionnet, for the premiere of her directorial debut W.E. at the 68th Venice Film Festival. Just perfection.

Number 3: The Farrah Fawcett
November 3, 2005. Madonna was just amazing, reinventing Farrah Fawcett, at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Lisbon, Portugal.

Number 2: The Virgin
September 14, 1984. At the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards. A Wedding dress and a 'Boy Toy" belt. Nothing else to say.

Number 1: The Blonde Ambition
No other costume is more iconic for me that the Jean-Paul Gaultier cone bra that Madonna wore during her Blonde Ambition Tour. Long Live to the Queen and thanks for these 30 amazing years.

Blondie: Fan Mail

I've been a Blondie fan since I was a teenager trying to get away from "ManĂ¡", Ricardo Arjona and "changa music" (music originated in Venezuela influenced by Techno and Raptor house) so popular among my peers - maybe they weren't my peers after all - during the late 80's and the 90's.

Atomic is in my top 5 favorite songs of all time and Deborah Harry will be young and beautiful forever in my mind.

October 4th will be the day when I'll see them live. Finally!!! The city... NY; the place.... Roseland Ballroom: me... extremely excited!!!

Just to celebrate I'm going to share with you this clip that a friend showed me today. A Black and white video of the group shot at CBGB probably on August 1975, a year before its debut album arrived on December 1976. They are playing a song entitled "A Girl Should Know Better" that never was included on any album. Enjoy!

Second Pussy Riot Denied Parole: No PasarĂ¡n!

Today in Mordovia, Russia, a Supreme Court denied an appeal parole for a second Pussy Riot singer Nadezhda Tolokonnikova.

Dressed in a black t-shirt with the words "No PasarĂ¡n" (spanish for The shall not pass), Nadezhda refused to plead guilty for hooliganism even when this may have acted in her favor.

Pussy Riot case has become one of the most visible cases of suppression of free speech during the recent years generating reactions all over the world.

As a Venezuelan citizen living out of his country, I can relate with these brave women who, coincidentally, are using my language to express their powerful message... NO PASARAN!!

Comic-Con 2013: Entertainment Weekly - The Visionaries

One of the highlights of day 1 at the International Comic-Con was the meeting with the directors Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Edgar Wright (The World's End, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World) and Marc Webb (Amazing Spider-Man). We hope to see the panel, hosted by Entertainment Weekly, on YouTube very soon but you can reed a good review now on "Geek of Doom" (click the link below). Here is an excerpt from the whole review:

"The three directors had quite the response when asked about the future of fillmaking. Cuaron seemed both concerned and excited about the changes he sees coming in the future. Cuaron and Webbs spoke to the current difficulties in the industry and talked about how hard it is to make smaller budget dramas these days. Webb talked about TV and cable channels becoming a place where the kind of dramas that we used to see on the big screen. Wright talked about the need for new properties and joked that without new ideas, Hollywood won't have anything to copy in five years"

Rolling Stone plants a bomb

A lot of people is criticizing Rolling Stone Magazine for putting Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the accused Boston Marathon bomber, on the cover of its last issue.

Here the respond from Rolling Stone on its Facebook page:

"Our Hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon, and our thoughts are always with them and their families. The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism the Rolling Stone's long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day. The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens. - THE EDITORS"

Maybe they're right and their hearts go out to the victims but without any doubt their heads go out to the money. They were trying to sell magazines and they did it. For me, the main problem is that not everybody is going to read the article. A lot of young people are going to see a guy who looks a little bit like Jim Morrison, kills a lot of people and is now on the cover of Rolling Stone.

San Diego Under Attack

Although International Comic-Con starts on Wednesday night, on Tuesday night and just for selected press, Legendary Pictures opened a part museum/part thematic park about one of its most anticipated projects... Godzilla. The "Godzilla Encounter" is an immersive experience that transports you to Tokyo under attack. People will find memorabilia, a replica of the city and even could know what it feels like  to be in a place where the monster is doing what it does, destroy everything.

Legendary is planning to release the Godzilla reboot during next summer.
If you are going to Comic-Con and want to take a look, visit http://godzillaencounter.com/ to get some info.
