Movie Review: Elysium: Upstairs, Downstairs

By definition Elysium is about ideal happiness; for me Elysium is now about absolute boredom. Everything in this movie is just silly. Rich people are bad, poor people are good; rich people speak French, poor people speak Spanish. In the future, capitalism is portray as a regression to a version of the Industrial Revolution in which big mass of people were abused on factories. It's almost like the consumerist era never happened in this movie but beside everything else I have to say something.... COME ON! It must be a less boring way of make Obamacare propaganda!

Katty Perry Roar - hear it now

Just a few hours before than Lady Gaga unveiled her Applause song, Katty Perry released his new single Roar.

In my opinion, it sounds a lot like Brave by Sara Bareilles.

What do you think?

Lady Gaga Applause - hear it now

One week before its official release, you can hear the new single by Lady Gaga.

Last Sunday she tweeted:

"Don't focus on ANY blogger criticism. I have been a producer/songwriter/musician for over 10 year. Trust the artist bloggers are not critics."

Well Lady Gaga, what can I say. I have a degree in film criticism and I've been working in the entertainment industry for over 10 years too. The only thing I can say about Applause is that it's OK, not more than that, not less.

But I'm doing this blog just to share things and have fun so let's hear it.

The Colbert Report gets lucky without Daft Punk

Due to contract obligations with MTV, Daft Punk cancelled their performance at The Colbert Report at the last minute. On Tuesday night, Colbert said "apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don't tell anyone, because fun fact: No one told me until two hours ago."

Ok, we didn't see Daft Punk on Tuesday night but instead we saw the greatest Colbert Report music video of all time.

Book Review: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

"Can you imagine, finally showing your true self to your spouse, your soul mate, and having him not like you?"

It can be silly writing a review about Gone Girl, one of the most commented books of the recent years and a best seller since the moment it was published, but I just read it and, as me just a month ago, maybe you haven't yet. Do it!

There are not wizards, vampires or dragons; it's mostly a story about two people but at the same time it's much more than that. Gilliam Flynn has given a new meaning to the expression "Til death do us part". We all create characters to face the world, different masks that we wear in different situations. That's the way we get friends, jobs, relationships, even love.

What is love then? a lie? one more role that we need to play? or maybe, as someone says in the book, is about been known by someone else. "He gets me. She gets me. Isn't that the simple magic phrase?".

For those who still don't know, Gone Girl is about a woman who disappears on her wedding anniversary. When the police start building a case the principal suspect will be, obviously, her husband. However the most interesting thing is not the investigation plot but the relationship between the couple. The faces they show to each other and the thing they expect of each other and finally the way they really end knowing each other.

Even though the book is about a couple relationship is not about romance. It's much more about the society today, about the lies we tell ourselves and the way we perceive each other. Maybe that's why the end of the book is so great and disturbing.

Just to end, I'm going to quote one of my favorites parts:

"And the Cool Girls are even more pathetic: They're not even pretending to be the woman they want to be, they pretending to be the woman a man wants them to be. Oh, and if you're not a Cool Girl, I beg you not to believe that your man doesn't want the Cool Girl. It may be a slightly different version - maybe he's a vegetarian, so Cool Girl loves seitan and is great with dogs; or maybe he's a hipster artist, so Cool Girl is tattooed, bespectacled nerd who loves comics. There are variations to the window dressing, but believe me, he wants Cool Girl, who is basically the girl who like every fucking thing he likes and doesn't ever complain."

These words are pronounce by Amy (the wife). Maybe she sounds as a bitch but after all, and as she says, she is the bitch who made her husband a man.

Jay-Z "Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film"

Let's face it. Jay-Z is not Marina Abramovic and "Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film: is nothing like "The Artist is Present". Jay-Z's film fails on show at least one intimate moment between the singer and one member of the audience. Nothing really interesting happen during the 10 minutes film, more a long music video than a short documentary.

On the other hand we have to give him some credit for trying to make something different.

Jay-Z's Picasso Baby tonight on HBO

On July 10th, Jay-Z performed "Picasso Baby", a track from his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, during six hours straight at New York City's Pace Gallery. Director Mark Romanek captured the whole experience. The result: Picasso Baby: a Performance Art Film, a 10 minutes documentary that will be aired tonight on HBO.

Romanek and Jay-Z were inspired by the film Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present, about an art installation at New York's Museum of Modern Art in which the artist sat for hours in front of everyday people and just look each other (the documentary is great by the way).

During an interview fro "The Playlist": Romanek commented:

I was aware of Marina Abramovic's "Artist is Present," even though I was in London shooting "Never Let Me Go" and didn't get to go. And the idea that Jay Z regularly performs to 60,000 people at a time, I thought, "What about performing at one person at a time?" He absolutely loved it. He interrupted me and said, "Hold on I've got chills. That idea is perfect." He thinks, like me, that the music video has had its era. I also wanted to make sure we had Marina's blessing. So she attended the event and took part in the event. She couldn't have been more happy or enthusiastic about us using her concept and pushing it forward.

Picasso baby: a Performance Art Film premieres tonight at 11:00 PM on HBO.

Fiona Apple - Hot Knife Video

Fiona Apple has reunited with her ex boyfriend, director Paul Thomas Anderson for her new video Hot Knife. It's a really simple video with a mixing of color and black and white shots presented together at the end. There something vital and hypnotic in Fiona during the hole video. The song... just amazing.

The other girl in the video is Fiona's sister Maude Maggart.

Hulu's The Awesome is, well, pretty awesome.

Pilot episode (in two parts) of Hulu's first original animated series is available to stream now. Co-producer, SNL star Seth Meyers gives his voice to the main character, a young superhero who has to lead a group of C class superheroes after the real team quick.

In the two parts pilot the main characters are presented. The team included a kid with double personality and a guy with mommy-issues among others. You definitely are not going to see this series on the 2014 Emmys but you can have a good time watching it.

The only thing I really don't like is that you can only watch these two episode. I think Hulu should learn one or two things from Netflix and let the people decide the way they want to watch the content. Let's be honest, we're not talking about Mad Men in here so I don't think a lot of people actually are going to be waiting for episode 3, and then 4, and then 5... so maybe it would be better to have all the episodes at once. Yesterday I'd have watched at least two more episodes; next week I don't know. Breaking Bad is about to start after all and we get running Dexter, The Newsroom, Ray Donovan, etc, etc, etc.

The Awesomes is available now on Hulu and Hulu Plus.
